Drug Awareness contest winners

The following students were honored for their award-winning work in the CUSD/Clovis Elks Club Drug Awareness Essay & Poster contest:

Essay Contest: Sierra teNyenhuis, sixth grade, Freedom Elementary School, $500; Jacob Kramer, sixth grade, Freedom, $400; Megan Long, sixth grade, Freedom, $400; Timothy Randall, sixth grade, Freedom, $300; Adam Wolfe, sixth grade, Century Elementary School, $100; Carissa Celum, sixth grade, Enterprise, $100; and Mariah Anderson, sixth grade, Freedom, $100.

Poster Contest: Renee Alves, fifth grade, Valley Oak Elementary School, $400; Alexis Tran, fifth grade, Nelson Elementary School, $300; Ian Ross, fourth grade, Ft. Washington Elementary School, $300; Gabrielle Rolph, fifth grade, Valley Oak, $100; Carlos Cabrera, fifth grade, Nelson, $100; and Prabhjot Kaur, fifth grade, Ft. Washington, $100.

Of all the school districts represented in the contest, Clovis Unified had the most student participation and winners statewide.

Soroptimist install officers

The Soroptimist International of Clovis installed new officers for the 2008-2009 year on June 17 at a club potluck dinner. The installation was conducted by Mio Quatraro.

Sue Mettee was installed as president. Other officers were Mary King, vice president; Judith Preuss, secretary; Audrilee Myers, treasurer; Carlyn Robbins and Margaret Wilcox, delegates; and Joan Lassley and Tammy Simonian, directors.

The club meets at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month and at noon on the third Tuesday of the month at the San Joaquin College of Law. Prospective members are welcome to attend. The goal of Soroptimist International Clovis is to "Make the Best for Women." Details: 324 8745.

EDUCATION

Students receive books

Second-graders at Freedom Elementary School received autographed copies and listened to a reading of Jeff Eben's book, "Danny is a Winner...And So Are You" at an assembly May 28. The illustrations, by Ernie Hergenroeder, show classroom scenes featuring the students during their first grade year.

Graduation

Robyn Nicole Nachtigall, of Clovis, graduated from Fresno Pacific University May 3. She received a bachelor of arts in biology.

The San Joaquin College of Law, in Clovis, celebrated its 35th graduation May 31 at Saroyan Theatre. Honorable Associate Justice Ming W. Chin, California Supreme Court, was the commencement speaker.

The following students graduated at the top of their class with honors: Heather Noel Phillips and Peter James Wall.

Dean's list

Andrew Gearhart, of Clovis, made the dean's list for the spring semester at Harding University. Gearhart is majoring in interactive media.

Jennifer J. Hushaw, of Fresno, made the dean's list for the spring semester at Saint Michael's College. Hushaw is a May graduate biology major. She is the daughter of Ronald Hushaw.

Kyle Huston, of Fresno, made the dean's list for the spring quarter at Savannah College of Art and Design. Huston is majoring in sequential art.

Alison M. Inouye, of Clovis, made the dean's list for the spring semester at Boston University.

Jessica Martinez, of Coarsegold, made the dean's list for the spring semester at Norwich University.

MILITARY

Graduation

Air Force Airman Brittany L. McKown has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

She is the daughter of Timothy McKown, of Madera, and Debra Nickell, of Clovis.

McKown is a 2006 graduate of Madera High School.

Air Force Airman Michael B. Waterston has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

He is the son of Bob Waterston, of Fresno, and Christy Clarke, of Clovis.

Waterston is a 2004 graduate of Buchanan High School.

Air Force Airman Andrew P. Clarke has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

He is the son of Kimberley Clarke, of Clovis.

Clarke is a 2006 graduate of Hoover High School.

Army National Guard Pfc. Jonathan S. Reese has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

He is the son of Renee Romine, of Clovis, and grandson of Fleeta Reese of Imperial Beach.

Reese is a 2003 graduate of Clovis High School.

Dean's List

Cadet Andrew Logan Gallagher achieved Dean's List status at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, for the spring semester of the 2007-08 academic year. Gallagher is seeking a bachelor of science in business administration.

He is a 2005 Buchanan High School graduate.

Gallagher is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Gallagher, of Clovis.

Service Academy

Congressman George Radanovich and the Service Academy Selection Committee held a reception for the Service Academy Nominees May 28 at the Legion of Valor Museum in Fresno. Among the nominees were Cyril Helbling, Army, of Clovis West High School, and Eric Silvas, Navy, of Buchanan High School. Helbling also received an appointment.
