Car thefts on the rise
The Clovis Police Department is warning homeowners in new developments to watch out for vehicle burglars, according to a department report.
Police have noticed an increase in vehicle thefts at Harlan Ranch, a new development near Temperance Avenue and Freeway 168; developments in the area bounded by Shepherd, Teague, Willow and Temperance avenues; and subdivisions east of Armstrong Avenue and south of Shaw Avenue.
The thieves are breaking windows and grabbing items such as briefcases, laptops, purses and wallets.
On June 25, Clovis Police Explorers dropped off fliers at new developments near Temperance and Shepherd avenues warning residents about the thefts. Residents are encouraged to lock their car doors and take valuables with them.
Seniors targeted
Scam artists have targeted Clovis seniors this month, according to a Clovis Police Department report. Two elderly Clovis women were contacted by phone about claiming millions in winnings if they mailed cashier's checks or cashed out certificates of deposit. The callers claimed to be from Publishers Clearing House. The women refused to hand over money and contacted police instead.
Fire reports
The Clovis Fire Department responded to 178 calls for service between June 16 and 22. The calls included four structure fires, one vegetation fire, two vehicle fires, four hazardous conditions calls, 31 public assistance calls, 126 medical aid calls and 10 false alarms.
Thefts and vandalism
Clovis police reported nine vehicle burglaries and 54 thefts last week, which included five residential burglaries, seven identity thefts and 14 petty thefts. There were two people arrested for petty theft.
There were 25 reports of vandalism to vehicles or property.
Items taken during the thefts included cameras, CDs, cell phones, computers, DVD players, jewelry, license plates, money, purses, stereos, tools, wallets, wire, guns, hoses, camping gear, beer, gas, clothes, sunglasses, a calculator, books, rims, tires, rear seats, a charger, toilet paper and cleaning supplies.
DUI arrests
The Clovis Police Department reported 10 people were arrested on suspicion of public intoxication last week. Two people were cited for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Arrests
Clovis police reported 27 people were arrested on warrants for various crimes or violations of probation or parole last week.
Seven juveniles were arrested or received a citation last week on suspicion of various crimes including battery, warrants, being out of control and disturbing the peace.
Fifteen people received citations for driving while their licenses were suspended or for driving without a license.
