Clovis Senior Center a cooling center
Friday, Jun. 20, 2008
The city of Clovis is reminding residents of precautions to take during extreme heat as well as when and where cooling centers will be active. The Clovis Senior Center, 850 Fourth St., will be a cooling center from noon to 10 p.m. on any day when the National Weather Service predicts Clovis temperatures to be 105 degrees or greater. Transportation to and from the center will be provided free of charge by Clovis Transit, 324-2760. The Sierra Vista Mall and Clovis Library are also available for cooling during normal business hours. All Clovis residents are reminded to take the following safety precautions during extreme heat:
Slow down. Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day.
Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing that reflects heat and sunlight and helps your body maintain normal temperatures.
Fruits and vegetables help the body maintain an appropriate balance. Drink plenty of water or other non-alcoholic fluids. Your body needs to keep cool. Drink even if you don't feel thirsty.
Check on at-risk family and friends during extreme heat conditions; check twice a day on friends and family members who are elderly, medically fragile or have limited access to adequate cooling.
Bring your pets inside during the hottest time of the day. Never leave pets in a parked car. Provide plenty of fresh water and shade for outdoor pets.
