Check presentation
Yosemite Gardens Retirement Community raised $2,300 for the Shriner's Hospital through a fundraiser in May. The check was presented to the San Joaquin Valley Potentate, Ronald Obernolte, June 13 at Yosemite Gardens in Clovis.
Rodeo board named
The Clovis Rodeo Association membership voted in the 2009 board of directors at their annual meeting in May. The 2009 officers elected are: Mark Thompson, president; Ron Dunbar, vice president; Susan Frantzich, secretary; and Colby Martin, treasurer. Additional board members elected include: Lynn Armstrong, Vern Barkman, Joe Billaiba, Larry Cowger, Vince Genco, Greg Gillard, Tom Hunter, Stan King, Eva Pollard, Chuck Rigsbee, Dan Rigsbee, Radar Ryan, Scott Saltzman and Mike Spears.
Volunteer honored
Volunteers and staff of the American Cancer Society honored Driver Coordinator Joann Schelling May 31 for her 26 years of volunteer service. As Driver for the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery Program, Schelling coordinated more than 90,000 rides for cancer patients living in Fresno and Clovis. She matched volunteer drivers with cancer patients and ensured that the patients made it to their appointments on time.EDUCATION

The following schools represented Clovis Unified School District at the Destination ImagiNation Global Finals in Knoxville, Tenn.:
Mickey Cox Elementary School, "DInamic 4," third place: Corbin Callaway, Adriana Gutierrez, Zachary Jones, Kyle Lawson and team managers Shari Callaway and Veronica Gutierrez.
Garfield Elementary School, "The Seven ups," ninth place: Aaron Urabe, Jordan Urabe, Victor Vo, Connor Matsudaira, Andrea Matsudaira, Noelle Stephens, Kim Tuckness, and team managers Douglas Urabe, Beth Urabe and Natalie Nguyen.
Nelson Elementary School, "Nelson Rockhoppers," thirty-ninth place: Roy Garrett, Sara Garrett, Emily Miller, Simon Nahigian, Koby Hayashi, Tucker Garrett, Stefanos Sophocleous and team managers Mike Garrett and Ailene Hayashi.
Buchanan High School, "Flying Aces," thirteenth place: Eunice Giarta, Sophia Daud, Kevin Gu, Yuki Itoh, Michael Kemmer, Patrick Ciolkosz, Larry Cushman and team manager Mark Trotter.
Boys State nominees
The following students are nominees for The American Legion California Golden Boys' State at Sacramento: Jeffrey Lester, Buchanan High School; Matthew Plaks, Clovis High School; Matthew Endler, Clovis West High School; Alec Chan-Golston, Clovis East High School; Jake Hughson, Clovis East; and Blake Semas, Clovis East.
The Clovis "Cecil Cox" Post 147 of the American Legion will sponsor the students.
President's honor roll
Elizabeth Suzanne Love, of Clovis, made the president's honor roll for the 2008 spring semester at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
Scholarships
University of California Merced student Jason Castillo, of Clovis, is one of the recipients of the Donald A. Strauss Public Service Scholarships. The scholarships fund public-service projects that students propose and then carry out their senior year. Castillo will complete a project that will promote interest in the areas of science and leadership in the Central Valley.
He is a 2005 graduate of Clovis High School.
High school seniors Sydney Barnes, of Buchanan High School, and Bradley Tamura, of Clovis West High School, each received $1,000 grants from Comcast's Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program that recognizes seniors for their leadership skills, positive attitude, academic achievement and various community service activities, including mentoring and tutoring younger students, volunteering at hospitals and participating in relief efforts.
Buchanan High School senior Summer Hill received a scholarship from Best Buy to attend Willow International Community College Center in the fall. She is the daughter of Nate and Joni Hill.
The Central California Big Band Dance Society awarded four Clovis high school seniors with $1,000 scholarships. Each student excels in some form of music and will continue their education by attending a college or university.
Winners include: Justin Richey, Buchanan High School; Sean Richey, Buchanan; Shannon Weber, Buchanan; and Amber Frantzich, Clovis East High School.
Other winners include: Brandon Rivera, Hoover High School; Cory Rowlodge, Yosemite High School; and Britani German, Sunnyside High School.
Colton Wilson, a Clovis High automotive student, received a $500 scholarship from Brett Hedrick of Hedrick's Chevrolet. Hedrick's has given the annual scholarship to Clovis High students for the past 40 years.
