Awards

Independent honors

Eight Clovis Unified student-athletes and 2008 graduates were recognized as their schools' Clovis Independent Athletes of the Year.

This year's recipients included: Buchanan's Tori Alvarez and Daniel Samarin; Clovis East's Marlee Wilkinson and Kenneth Russell; Clovis High's Niko Gomes; and Clovis West's Allison Berryhill, Jeff Daniels and Kyle Negrete.

Relay for Life

Walk raises $68k

The sixth annual Clovis Relay for Life attracted 27 teams May 17 and 18 -- up from about 18 in years past -- which raised about $68,000 for cancer research.

Teams raised money for the 24-hour walk, which started at 9 a.m. May 17 and concluded at 9 a.m. May 18. One member of each team was required to be on the Clovis High track at all times.

"That was one of the hottest days, over 100 [degrees], and we had no complaints," said Clovis Relay for Life co-chair Sarah Gattie. "People just had a good time this year, to the point they didn't notice the heat."

Of the 335 people involved in the walk, about 30 were cancer survivors. Proceeds benefited the American Cancer Society.

Track and Field

State meet hits town

Buchanan's Veteran Memorial Stadium will host the CIF State Track and Field Championships for the next three years, the CIF executive committee announced June 23.

"CIF's selection of Clovis Unified to host this premier event is a tremendous honor not only for our district, but also for the entire Fresno/Clovis and Central California community," said Clovis Unified School District superintendent Terry Bradley in a release. "The fact that, for the first time in 36 years, a statewide committee selected a high school stadium to host the event is a reflection of the importance our community places on providing outstanding facilities for our students. We look forward to the opportunity to provide a world-class experience to California's student-athletes, their coaches and their families."

The last high school site to host the state meet was Woodland High in 1973.

The 2009 state meet is scheduled for June 5 and 6.

Olympic trials

Tim Bogdanof (Buchanan, 1998) is headed to the Olympic Track and Field Trials.

The 2003 Cal graduate raced to a provisional qualifying time of 13:54 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles June 15 at Mount San Antonio College, beating out American record holder Dominique Arnold for the win.

"The whole season was looking pretty grim," said Bogdanof, 28. "I've been in a steady decline the last two years, and I was pretty convinced I was past my prime."

The A-standard time of 13.40 earns a runner an automatic bid to the trials. The provisional cut time is 14.00. The runners with the top 32 overall times -- standard and provisional -- advance to Olympic trials June 27 to July 6 in Eugene, Ore.

Bogdanof's 13.54 is tied for 26th among American hurdlers.

"When I got out of the blocks, I saw the end of my career," he said. "And I just said, 'Oh no, not today.' "
