Eagles Sprint to Valley Title; State Medal for Clovis Frosh
Friday, Jun. 20, 2008
Girls Track & Field
Track MVP
Magen Del Pino
Clovis West, senior
Del Pino's goal at the Buchanan Relays at the beginning of the season was to break 12 seconds in the 100-meter dash. By season's end, the Bullard transfer held a personal-best 11.66-second time in the 100 and a section record in the 200 (23.94, surpassing her own mark of 24.25 set the week before at the North Area meet). Del Pino, who swept the Valley sprints, qualified for the state finals in both events, finishing eighth in the 200 and ninth in the 100.
Field MVP
Jenna Prandini
Clovis, freshman
Prandini, despite a hip injury that plagued her throughout the season, was the only Clovis Unified athlete to medal at state. The section long-jump champion went 19 feet, 23/4 inches for a fourth-place finish in the state. A sprinter as well, Prandini missed the state 100 finals by .07 seconds. She was second in the 100 and triple jump at the Central Section meet.
Rookie of the Year
Alyssa Monteverde
Clovis West, freshman
One of three Clovis West girls to win Central Section titles (along with Magen Del Pino and Allison Berryhill), Monteverde clinched Valley gold in the 100 high hurdles (14.59), 300 low hurdles (43.92) and high jump (5 feet, 4 inches). At state, the freshman missed the Saturday competition by inches in the high jump and less than half a second in the 300 hurdles.
Coach of the Year
Brian Allen
Clovis West
The "scary good" Clovis West girls track team left the rest of the Valley coughing in its dust, taking its first Valley team title since 1999 by 39 points. The win included six individual titles (three for Alyssa Monteverde, two for Magen Del Pino and one for Allison Berryhill).
The Rest of the Team
Chloe Allen
Clovis West, junior
Allen, an All-City cross country selection in the fall, placed third in the 1,600 (5:04.62) and 3,200 (11:06.19) at Valley, qualifying for state in both. Dropping the 1,600 to concentrate on the mile, she placed 14th at state.
Saylah Barserian
Clovis, sophomore
A Central Section champion in the 1,600 (5:02.98), Barserian missed the state finals by less than a second. She was also fifth in the 800 at Valley, earning the team's co-Outstanding Track Performer award.
Allison Berryhill
Clovis West, senior
Berryhill's 11-6 leap at the Valley meet earned her a gold medal after a tiebreaker with Liberty's Amanda Klinchurch was sorted out. Her 10-9 mark in the state preliminaries earned her a tie for 19th.
Meghan Marvin
Clovis, sophomore
A league champion in the 800 and Valley runner-up in the 1,600 and 3,200, the 2007 All-City Rookie of the Year was eighth in the state 3,200. She was named the team's co-Outstanding Track Performer.
Carrington Mahr
Buchanan, junior
Mahr, the North Area high jump champion (5-4), finished third in the Central Section meet (5-2) and tied for eighth at state (5-3). The junior's 5-6 jump in the state preliminaries set a Buchanan girls record.
Jen Melton
Clovis West, junior
Melton was a fourth-place finisher at Valley in the 100 hurdles (15.37), and earned a trip to state when Monteverde dropped out of the event. Melton was third in the 100 and fourth in the 300 at North Area.
